During the 40+ years I have tried to make a living in Michigan much has happened. Even though there were Republican and Democrat governors through the years, the bureaucracy in our state never ceased to grow. Our full-time legislators and senators, with their generous salaries and pensions, tried to make their jobs mean something by passing more laws and increasing the size of the bureaucracy. The end result are fees, restrictions on how to operate a business, multiple license requirements, innumerable reports to complete and penalties to pay for noncompliance if anything is missed.
Michigan residents wonder why companies hesitate to hire without going through temp services. Small businesses that hire directly are putting their businesses on the line every time they put on a new employee. Between the state and federal requirements they must comply with and the cost incurred to comply with all the regulations imposed upon them, not to mention the penalties they incur if they miss something, a small business needs to pay an accountant and an attorney just to make sure they are not breaking the law. No mention is made of the need to terminate an employee if they are not capable of doing the job they were hired to do.
Those are the reasons companies hire through temp agencies, they cannot afford not to.
Then there are the taxes. Of course, to feed this bloated bureaucracy, the money must come from somewhere, and guess who pays the bill. It is little wonder people and businesses are leaving the state by the thousands. Companies are leaving because there are fewer demands on their gross income and their employees are leaving because jobs are more plentiful elsewhere.
Only when our representatives and senators realize the state of Michigan itself is a drain on the economy and not a contributor will things change. Lets hope they realize this before it is too late.
